Masculine & Feminine Energy in Astrology

Masculine & Feminine Energy in Astrology

So, here I am, back to writing after a long break. I am planning to write a few articles on specific topics and then a couple of series of articles in the coming times. I am resuming writing from the 1st request I had received; i.e. how would the approach of a person be different, for the same/similar chart, based on whether they are more masculine or more feminine in their basic nature?

I wrote an article on similar lines last year titled ‘Introvert Vs Extrovert use of Astrology’ - https://www.astrosaxena.com/AstrologyIE which can be helpful in the present discussion too but I feel this topic has possibilities of deeper insights and hence I am inclined to write further over it.

Let’s cover this article under the following points –

Masculine and Feminine – First of all, we have to understand that Masculine Nature and Feminine Nature have nothing to do with the Male or Female birth gender. An individual can be Male by birth but be very feminine by nature and can keep all feminine qualities and traits. Likewise, another individual can be female by gender but can have all masculine traits within. We can see the best example in Astrology or Mythology itself where Moon is considered a feminine planet but still marries 27 celestial ladies known as Nakshatras. So, gender-wise Moon is male but nature wise Moon is feminine because he has all feminine traits like nourishing/taking care of people, receptivity and emotions etc.

In Mythology too, if we see, all major 4 incarnations of God in India; i.e. Ram, Krishna, Mahavir and Buddha, were males by gender but have been given a very feminine look with long hair and clean shaven face. So, the first thing we need to keep in mind is that we are talking about nature or traits and not about the birth gender when we talk about masculine or feminine.

Masculine Vs Feminine Nature Traits – A person with predominant masculine nature can be more assertive, aggressive and up-front in his/her ways of functioning. A person with predominant feminine nature can be more receptive, emotional, caring and nourishing in his/her ways of functioning.

Aggressiveness isn’t necessarily evil and being emotional isn’t necessarily good. It all goes back to the same Gunas level (Satva, Rajas and Tamas) as to where someone is using his aggressiveness or emotions. That choice of utilization will decide the eventual results

Planets & Zodiac Signs – Now, the reason why I feel that this is a topic worthy to reflect is that in Astrology there is a clear mention of Masculine Vs Feminine Planets. Not only that, even Zodiac Signs are given Masculine Vs Feminine categories. For example –

Sun, Mars and Jupiter are Masculine.

Moon and Venus are Feminine.

Saturn and Mercury are Neutral

Among Zodiac signs, all odd number signs are Masculine and all even number signs are Feminine. It means Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are masculine signs, whereas Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are Feminine Signs.

Masculine Chart Vs Feminine Chart – Primary Observation – Now one of the ways can be that if a person is born with many planets in Masculine Signs then person can be masculine by nature otherwise if a person is born with many planets in Feminine Signs then person can be feminine by nature. But I don’t see it manifesting like this in people’s chart. Personally speaking, I may check the energies in masculine Vs feminine sign but I may not pay more attention than this.

Then how to judge the Masculine Vs Feminine Nature predominance of a person as per the chart?

Here comes the secondary criteria - Nature – Now, the word which we continuously use with Masculine or Feminine traits is “Nature”. We say that X person is of Feminine Nature or Y person is of Masculine Nature. Nature means “Prakriti”. From times immemorial, we have been having discussions over the functioning of Purush and Prakriti. When last year I wrote heavily on Gunas of Nature, I wrote about various ways we can understand or address them. It is the same thing, which we can address in different ways, Purush and Prakruti or Consciousness and Mind or Yin and Yang etc.

So, we can see that nature or Prakriti is the same as Mind. Our Mind basically indicates our nature and in Astrology, mind is represented by Moon. So, if we split a human in 3 parts; i.e. Body, Mind and Soul, then in Astrology, Ascendant Sign represents Body, Moon Sign represents Mind and Sun Sign represents Soul. So, the Moon sign can give a lot of indication towards our nature.

Hence, to be very generic, moon in masculine signs can represent masculine nature and moon in Feminine Signs can represent Feminine Nature.

But then, if a person has Moon in Masculine Sign but gets impacted by restrictive malefic energy like Saturn or Ketu then person is unable to exhibit that Masculine Nature up to a big part of their life. Likewise, if a person has Moon in Feminine Sign but gets impacted by restrictive malefic energy like Saturn or Ketu then person is unable to exhibit that Feminine Side up to a big part of their life. Here, it is not that the feminine energy would convert into masculine or Vice-versa but just that the person may not be able to express the given nature due to the impact of Saturn or Ketu for majority of 1st half of life and may feel a lot of frustration due to that. After mid-30s or 40s onwards, person may be able to utilize the feminine/masculine nature in better ways.

Tertiary Way - Another way we can get an idea about Masculine Vs Feminine Nature from a chart is by looking at which planet is becoming most important by being the ruler of other planets through its Signs or Nakshatras and then look at whether that planet is in Masculine or Feminine sign and the dignity therein.

Final way – As human life moves as per dashas we go through, looking at dasha planet can also be helpful in finding the kind of Masculine or Feminine results you can expect from a native. If the person is going through a dasha which is of a Planet in masculine sign then we can expect more masculine actions coming from the person or vice-versa.

A Few Examples – Here are a few examples to understand this concept –

  • In my chart - https://www.astrosaxena.com/Astrologer , we can see that Moon is becoming an important planet as it rules over Jupiter in 9th house/Cancer, Sun-Mars-Mercury in 3rd house/Capricorn/Shravana and Moon itself is in own nakshatra Rohini. So, Moon is holding over energy of 5 out of 9 planets and then Moon is exalted in 7th house/Taurus which is a feminine sign. It shows that I can be a heavily feminine person which I always felt. As Saturn aspect was there, I couldn’t express this feminine side of mine but from mid-30s onwards, it is very much in forefront.
  • There was an acquaintance of mine whose chart is filled with masculine and fiery energy. She had Jupiter-Moon conjunction in Leo and another 4 planets in Sagittarius. Rahu-Jupiter mutual aspect was further expanding/exploding this fiery masculine energy. Saturn was not impacting these two signs; i.e. Leo and Sagittarius. It means 6 out of 9 planets, inclusive of Moon, was activating fiery masculine energy for her. Although she is a female by gender but I haven’t seen more aggressive, fiery and masculine person than her. I could actually feel her heat and fire when I was interacting with her.
  • So, we can see that in all these situations, it is Moon’s position, dignity and impacts on Moon that was a deciding factor.

Conclusion - A Masculine person, as per the above discussion, may use the same energy of planets/signs/houses in an extrovert/aggressive or assertive way whereas a predominantly feminine person may utilize the same energy of planets/signs/houses in an introvert or receptive or creative way.
