Rumi’s Poem - Vultures

1. The reason is the human’s carrion bird

The questions that it poses are absurd

It feeds on logic, to it ecstasy

Is the main danger and the enemy

2. The saintly reason is more like the wings

Of Gabriel who soars above all things

So leave the carrion bird to pick the dead

And soar with me in ecstasy instead.

3. Come fly with me, I’ll take you to a height

Beyond ten thousand vultures in full flight.

Important Words –

Carrion Bird –  Bird which sustains itself on dead bodies of other animals.

Absurd – Illogical.

Ecstasy – Free state of mind, beyond any limitations.

My interpretation –

1. Human Mind works on logic & reason and the reason or logic is based on set principles. Those set principles of conditioning are actually age old dead principles. Mind is uncomfortable and feels threatened if this conditioning is questioned.

2. Conditioned Human Mind is afraid of ecstasy as in blissful ecstatic state person goes beyond and breaks the conditioning principles of society and mind loses its comfort zone.

A truly Saintly person has logics or reasons which are beyond conditioned principles of Society. Hence, we should leave the comfort of the conditioned human mind; which survives on age old dead principles or boundaries, so called traditions, and move beyond these to reach the pure consciousness state.

3. Rumi invites us on a journey with him, towards that Pure Consciousness. He says it is only possible when we leave our conditioned mindsets that have been fed to us by the society (parents, school, teachers, friends etc) that we would be able to reach those higher heights of pure consciousness (divine).Until we are tied to these conditionings (vultures), they’ll keep dragging us down and not let us realize our true potential.
