Rumi’s Poem – Light on Rubbish.

“Behold the light that falls on rubbish heaps

Illuminating filth, and yet it keeps

Its purity. So heaven’s radiance shines

On humanity, which below it creeps.”

My interpretation – Now, my interpretation of this poem is as follows –

As I understand, Rumi is saying that when we look at some dirt, filth or rubbish material then we should look at the light which is making us realize that dirt, filth or rubbish. Then we should also realize that light, which is making us realize the filth, is not impacted or influenced by the same filth.

Understand it like this, suppose you enter in a dark room with a small torch in your hand and that torch is making you realize the right way to go in that room. Now, everything can be dark in that room but not the light which is emanating from that torch. That light will not be impacted by the darkness of the room.

Likewise, within all of us the Soul of Divine resides and witnesses everything from within. Now, regardless of the nature of actions (good/bad/ugly) of any individual, we should not forget that Divine resides within him.

Osho says in one of preaching that I accept everyone as my disciple. I don’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter to me if you are a Thief or Sage,  Drunkard or Sober, Smoker or Non-Smoker, Moral or Immoral etc. because if God is giving you place in this existence and if God is letting you live here then who am I to do any  discrimination or segregation against you.

Another way of understanding this poem can be that if we are able to see the Divine within Self then we will be able to see the Divine within others too and then everything & everyone will be filled with Divine. In that situation, there will be nothing like Good/Bad/Ugly as everything is sustained by the same Divine.

Hope this helps. Thanks,
