Rumi's Poem – Waiting......

No loving heart shuts suddenly without reason, sit by its door and keep vigil till dawn, the secret lover appears by night.

Only a heart free from the world’s ties, can behold the vision of the Beloved.

And at the moment of union like a King with an invisible crown, the heart will dance ecstatically, turning the stones into jewels under feet.

But be silent, this precious secret is not for unworthy ears.



Interpretation of Poem

Again, this can be interpreted for individual lover or divine lover both.

If a person or as God is truly in love with you then they cannot suddenly abandon you. Even if they are upset over something then be patient and wait for them. Even if you decide to wait till dawn, the lover may arrive by the night itself. It means that if love is true then reunion is not as difficult as you may be feeling. You may have to take one step forward and if love/lover is true then he will make remaining steps towards you.

Here, wait till dawn can also be interpreted is patiently waiting for awakening, in matters of Divine Love. This also reminds me of the quote from The Shawshank Redemption where Andy says to Warden (when Warden asks him about his favorite verse from Bible) – ““Watch, therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh.” It means that we should always be aware and conscious as awakening can take place any time.

The one, who is not attached in outer world, can find the divine within.

And when the union happens with lover/divine, the joy and ecstasy is the obvious outcome. In that moment, we realize that all obstacles in our path were actually stepping stones (turning the stones into jewels under feet).

And again it comes back to the importance of Silence in spiritual journey. Here, Rumi says that it is better not to share much about your spiritual journey with others because everyone may not be able to understand it and they may not understand worth/value of the journey. Let them follow their path and you should follow your path.
